Wow.
I haven't posted since August. That makes me feel like a huge blogging failure. When I started back in January, I thought I would at least make it through the first year without falling completely off the grid.
I had a lot of reasons for the drop. I homeschool my kids, and this summer was the first time since they were very small we took the whole summer off from school. Normally we maintain a 3-4 day per week schedule, occasionally missing several days in a row to do fun things with friends. This summer, however, they were full time members of the competitive shooting team. There were out of town competitions in June and July. That meant there were still practices several nights per week and Saturdays. At the end of May I thought to myself, "You know, we could just take the summer off, and not kill ourselves." Famous last words. I spent all of August trying to get back on track.
Then in September I took a part time job. I haven't "worked" since just before my oldest child was born. She just turned 14 last month. I am working at home some now, but initially I was going into the office several days a week. I was trying to cram all the other stuff, housework, grocery shopping, school, cooking, etc, into fewer hours. Something had to give, and one of the somethings was this blog.
Then in early October my mother, brother, three children and I took a road trip from our home in Arkansas to see my sister and brother in law in Rhode Island. It was a wonderful, jam packed, 10 day, 3,000 mile round trip, that required about 5 days recovery! I plan to do a post all about it soon.
One of the things that pushed me to blog each week were the "built in" topics that I could link to on other blogs. Most of those are thrift store/flea market/yard sale themed linky parties, and I almost always have something new to show from one of those sources. When I sat down to type this new installment, I discovered that two of the blogs have not hosted parties recently.
However, Magpie Monday is up and running over at Me and My Shadow, so I will be linking up there. Fortunately, although I stopped posting about my finds, I didn't stop finding, so I have a glut of items to share!
Without further adieu, or whining and excuse making, here are a few of the treasures I've found over the past few months.
Vintage jewelry! I bought a little plastic bag full at a yard sale for $1, and this is what was in it. It is all very dirty, and I have only worked on cleaning the piece with the green stones. I need to read up on cleaning vintage enamel before I tackled some of it.
I found this beautiful chalkware plaque for .25 at another yard sale. I love birds, and the colors on this are so lovely.
At the same yard sale I found this Dansk enamel sauce pot. It's in terrific condition, and I love the color. It will probably end up in my Etsy shop eventually.
And finally, some shoes!
I bought all of those darling little toddler shoes for a friend's daughter, but I was off by about two sizes, so they might find their way to the resale shop. I just can't pass up Converse, no matter the size. The saddle oxfords are for my vintage loving 14 year old. She was thrilled to see them.
I have a variety of vintage Christmas items that I will be adding to my Etsy shop soon. I hope to blog about them and link up next week.

Vintage Girl Scout Items
My sister lives in Rhode Island. She's not a thrifter or yard saler. I know, it confuses me, too. Anyway, she recently scored a large lot of vintage Girl Scout stuff and sent it to me to put in my Etsy shop. I have been dragging my feet because I was unsure how to list it. All together for one price? Each piece individually? Some of both? I decided some of both was the way to go, so I am working on getting all of what you will see in this post in the Etsy shop.
In the meantime, I'll share it with you.
First, we have this Girl Scout uniform dress, probably from the 1950's.
That's actually Bekah, my 8 year old, modeling the dress. I would guess this dress was worn by a much older girl back in the 1950's, but it almost fits her, so I would estimate it at a modern size girls 10.
The dress is in remarkably good shape for it's age. It has two very small spots, but otherwise is wonderful.
There were also a bunch of patches and pins.
And this adorable collapsible aluminum cup.
Yeah, that's too cute.
Speaking of too cute, here is Bekah in the dress, belt, sash, beret, and necktie.
I can't believe the Girl Scouts gave up the beret.

Yard Sale Haul: Part 2
Ok, I realize that I should have titled my last post "Yard Sale Haul: Part 1" rather than "Vintage Toys: Part 1", but I was so starry eyed over the Barbie furniture that I got confused. As I mentioned in that post, my finds last week were so uncharacteristically numerous that I couldn't fit them all in one post without risking putting readers into a trance.
If you read this post, you know that Bekah has a humongous dollhouse. It is too big for any normal table, so I had been on the lookout for one of these upon which to rest it.
I had put a train table on my mental list, and within two weeks, there it was. I paid $10 for it, and the dollhouse is already atop it, looking great. (in truth, even at 3ft x 4ft it's still a bit small for the house, but is an improvement over what we had.) It has two large drawers underneath to hold her extra furniture.
Books were another big find last week. I sort of collect vintage children's books. I say sort of because it's not an official collection, I'm just captivated by their illustrations.
Look at that book in the lower left, Pockets. Have you ever seen anything cuter??
Not all of the books I bought were vintage. With three voracious readers in the house, I rarely pass up good books.
Rachel has read many of these before, but I pick them up again for Joshua and Bekah.
I'll wrap up part 2 with these darling vintage children's book and record sets.
The taller black and yellow ones in the back came with a filmstrip!!! A filmstrip I tell ya! Just like the old kids' books, these book and record sets often have the most adorable images on them. Most of these will be in my Etsy shop soon, so if you have a favorite you can get it there.
Check back in the next few days for part 3. There are more toys and some odds and ends.
Did you find any vintage goodies, or just anything good for cheap, last week? Share in the comments.
(i tried a new technique for photographing things. i put a sheet over a large window, hoping to take advantage of muted natural light. as you can see, it was a major fail.)

Vintage Toys: Part 1
I went to a few yard sales this weekend. Normally I try to include photos of everything I got over the course of one week in my Sunday night post. I can usually cram all of it into 4 or 5 photos. Throw in a few close ups, and my thrifting/yard saling posts usually have about a half dozen pics. This week I needed 11 group pics to get it all in. That does not include the close up shots. ELEVEN! Let's just say I got a shocking amount of stuff this weekend. As a result, I have decided to break it up into several posts over the course of the week, and just focus tonight on one aspect of my finds. Check back over the next few days if you'd like to see the entire haul.
I had a strange experience on Saturday. I returned to the same yard sale three times. I know. It was very close to my house, almost close enough to walk to. I stopped the first time and bought several vintage toys and other items. However, I left some things behind that I was on the fence about. It was several early 80's original Cabbage Patch Kids and a ton of their clothes. When I got home I mentioned them to Rachel, and she agreed that I should go back and get them (hehehe). When I got back to the sale, only about 20 minutes had elapsed, but during that time someone else had swooped in and bought them. Remember rule number one in bargain hunting: You snooze, you lose. Anyway, on this second trip back I spotted something even better that had not been there before. The man having the sale told me he was still bringing stuff out, and would be for several hours. That led to the need for a third trip about an hour later.
The golden find on that second trip is the subject of this post. I walked back over to where the CPK's had been, and saw a box full of this:
Is that vintage inflatable Barbie furniture??! You'd better believe it! And who is that lovely gal seated on the blow up chair?
Oh, it's Barbie's little sister, Skipper. She's straight out of 1970, and looking great.
I already had the large cardboard box in my hands, ready to buy it. There was a ton of stuff under the inflatable furniture, but I didn't even bother to look at it there. It would not have mattered if that box had contained a rat carcass from 1970, I was buying it and taking it home. Once home I found this:
Ah, Barbie (1966) and Ken (1968) relaxing on the Dream Furniture from 1978. The tables are missing their mirrored (mylar) tops, but they are still really fun. That desk intrigues me. I don't recall anything like it from the late 70's, real or toy. Very futuristic.
The box contained many more treasures, including another Barbie and Ken, and a bunch of replacement pieces for the Barbie Star Traveler RV. Those might show up in one of the later posts, and they will be available in my Etsy shop soon.
In fact, the plan is to put all of this treasure in my Etsy shop in the future. That can't happen right now, though, because of this:
Yes, that's my smallest chick, fresh from her pre-bedtime shower, resuming the activity that she had been engaged in since the big cardboard box entered the house before lunch. She knows they are not "hers", and that they are not staying forever, but she is enjoying them for now, so any Etsy buyers anxious to relive their 1970's childhood will have to wait a bit. A 21st century kid is busy with them right now.

Delightful Jewelry
No snappy title. My brain is tired. It's a good thing I took some pics of these beauties on the day I bought them, or this post probably wouldn't happen. If someone has some extra energy to spare, send it my way.
I went yard saling with my mom on Thursday. Craigslist told us that there was an estate sale a few miles away, so that was our starting point. It was pretty good. I got a lid that I was missing for a Pyrex casserole for 50 cents. There was a table full of jewelry, and the prices were very reasonable. Rachel and I both love vintage brooches and clip on earrings. Later we made our way to a sale that had been advertised on CL for over a week. It listed some guns, which interested me for the kids shooting sports club, but those were all gone. What was left was some darling pins. I think most of them qualify as vintage. A few will end up in my Etsy shop, but most will live with me and my girls.
About half of this came from each sale. The little knife was a bonus find for Joshua. My grand total was around $8.
Here's a close up of some of the pins.
That little blue bird is just too cute. His tummy is a shiny stone. He reminds me of the old Lefton china wall hangings. My Gramma had some pink fish in her bathroom. I'm a big fan of enamel jewelry, so I didn't hesitate to buy the blue flower. The tiny gold one above the crown is the space shuttle. We are huge NASA geeks, so I knew everyone in my family would be excited about that one.
Let's take a look at some of the Christmas pins and the earrings, shall we?
That Christmas tree pin is too beautiful for words. The picture just doesn't do it justice. The little jewels are a lovely blue-green, and when the pin is upright they hang down. It will definitely make some appearances this Christmas season. The little snowman and bells remind me of the type I had when I was a kid. I haven't tried to track down any information on them yet. You might notice that I mentioned clip on earrings, and none of those are. I rarely wear pierced earrings, and Rachel's ears are not yet pierced, but I liked all of these too much to pass up. The pink and black dangly ones are very lightweight, so I should be able to wear them. The set with the blue stones is lovely, and I will probably hang on to them.
Well, that wraps up the jewelry show for this week. I will be linking up with several linky parties, so click the links below to see what you can find.

Before & After: The Old School Desk & Cabinet
We've been homeschooling for 8 years. During that time we have tried every imaginable combination of desks/tables/workstations for our three kids. We are blessed to have a room in our house that acts only as the school room (though it is the room through which most people enter the house. yikes!). A few years ago I built in an L-shaped desk that had work space for two kids plus one computer station. Nearby was the bar on the back of our kitchen counter, and that provided another desk/workspace and another computer station. That worked pretty well for a couple of years, but recently it dawned on my that my older kids almost never do their work in the school room anymore. The go to the couch, table, bedroom, or even the tree house. Bekah was the only one still doing most of her work in the school room, seated at a desk.
While browsing one of my favorite thrift stores, I found a little vintage school desk. You can read all the details about it here, but I got it for just over $6.
Isn't it cute? It had some rust, particularly around the rim of the desk, and the wood on the seat shows some wear, but I loved it.
I brought it home and began to work on it.
I sanded off all the loose rust with a wire brush. Apparently I broke the cardinal rule of Before & After, and I forgot to take enough pictures. I thought I had more, but can't find them. I coated all the metal parts with rust inhibiting spray primer, followed by inexpensive white spray paint. Using the white all over helps the final color to look more even with less paint. I even taped off the wooden parts of the chair and painted the metal. Here is the end result.
So cute! When I asked Bekah what color she wanted it to be, she said "Baby blue or yellow." I don't know why I asked, because I had planned to use turquoise all along. That was close enough to baby blue for her, though. The color is Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze.
To give her a pop of sunshine every time she opens the desk, I used a BRIGHT yellow inside.
The little cabinet behind the desk is another B&A. It was a spur of the moment decision. I knew that once I got rid of the L-shaped desk area with it's drawers and cubbies she'd need some place to keep her books nearby. I got the little cabinet for $2.97 (i know!!) from the same thrift store, but many weeks earlier. It looked like this when I brought it home.
After a little scraping, a little sanding, a coat of cheap white spray paint, and a coat of the turquoise, this is how she looks now.
The funny thing is, since I got this set finished and put into the school room, I have found all three kids using it! I guess everyone likes it, and that's good.

Thrifty Finds
Well, there was some thrifting and some yard saling this week. In addition, I keep coming across small things that I've thrifted in the recent past, but not blogged about, and I'm including some of those. Let's start with books.
There are some books for our immediate use, like the Andrew Jackson biography, and some for our collections, like the fish identification book, and some vintage books. I do love vintage books.
I have a soft spot for Eloise Wilkin books. When my children were babies and toddlers, My Goodnight Book and My Good Morning Book were two of our favorites. The illustrations are so sweet! The old cave book is for Joshua, who is a cave enthusiast. Last is that awesome cover art on Peril on Mars by Patrick Moore. How charming is that??
It seems logical to follow books with books with 45 rpm records. I got all of these at a local thrift store about two weeks ago.
Aren't they sweet? They will probably all end up in my Etsy store soon. If I come across an old kid's record player maybe I'll change my mind.
And finally, this mix of items from garage sales.
A few more books, an old box of rubber bands (try to find a rubber band in my house when you need one. i dare you.), some craft "spouncers", and these cuties.
Some cute kitty cat buttons, and a pair of vintage clip on earrings. Rachel and I collect these.
I will be linking up with Me and My Shadow for Magpie Monday and Her Library Adventures for Flea Market Finds. Go see what goodies were found this week.
ETA: Oh look, Apron Thrift Girl is back! Let's go join her for Thrift Share Monday. And for you TSM folks, be sure to click the Thrift Share Monday label below to see my finds from the past few weeks.

Thrifty Finds
I thought I wouldn't have much to post this week because I was out of town at a kids' shooting competition Thursday through Saturday, but I managed to squeeze in a few goodies. In addition, I had a few things from last week that I had not posted. The result is not a thrifting megapost, but I think it will do.
At a yard sale this week I got these.
Moss rose. I love moss rose, and have had trouble getting mine to return each year. I hope these from a very old, established bed will do better. Do you find it odd that I would find plants at a yard sale? It's quite common around here. Earlier in the spring I got several lovely hostas, and a week ago I was in a thrift store and they had a couple of bags of these for $1.
Hen and chicks. I got so many of these for $1 that Rachel used some to make potted plants for Mother's Day. (that went very well, btw, and i will post about it later in the week) I love these little guys. I ordered seeds for some mixed variety and mixed colors last year, but nothing ever came up. It was a bad year for plants in Arkansas last year. We had 100 year flooding in the spring, followed by a summer of record 100+ days. Ick.
Ok, back to the finds.
Most of this odd assortment came from the yard sale where I got the moss rose. The exception is the lovely orange Old Navy sweater for Rachel. There are several little glass bottles with Rx on the top, some Happy Meal toys from the 1990's, a Fisher Price Little People wagon, and a funky little gold and red poodle pin cushion/thimble. Here's a better shot of that.
A weird, quirky little piece. I might let Rachel keep it (she's my sewing buddy), or I might put it in my Etsy shop, along with some of the toys.
At the same yard sale I got this great box purse.
Again, it might end up in the Esty shop.
Here are a few finds from last week that I saved because A) I thought I'd have next to nothing to share, and B) I was too lazy to photograph them last week.
Isn't that cloth calendar from 1975 great?! I might keep that. The vintage Santa book is actually a thrifting buy from a few weeks ago, but it was on a shelf with this other stuff. The illustrations are very cute. The other two items are a glass baby bottle, and an old ink bottle. Both might just be donated, but the ink bottle was very cute, and might end up on Etsy, and the baby bottle was in a box of stuff I bought for $1 because it contained an air vent diffuser that I needed (not interesting enough to post here). Here's a close up of the calendar.
Yeah, that's cute.
I'm linking up with Me and My Shadow for Magpie Monday and Her Library Adventures for Flea Market Finds. (if ATG returns, i'll link there. anyone know if she's coming back?)
ETA: I just discovered Hey What's for Dinner Mom? and The Penny Worthy Project, so I'm linking up there, too.

Thrifty Finds
Just like last week, it has been a good week for thrifting. This is mainly due to the fact that I can hit some garage sales each week. I ♥ thrift stores, but for pricing, garage sales are even better.
I thrifted on Tuesday, while the kids were in their chemistry class, but all I bought was one pair of pants for Rachel. She is going to begin doing a feature on this blog about thifting for teens. Keep an eye out for that. I hit some yard sales on Friday, and here, in no particular order, is some of what I got.
Very nice rain boots for Bekah, an unopened container of tile adhesive, and the Kit Cat clock.
It's missing the tail, and I'm not sure how old it is. The reproductions for sale on Amazon right now take one AA battery, and this one requires two C batteries, so I hope that will help me date it.
I also got another pair of rain boots. They were 25 cents because they have a hole, but I plan to do a crafty thing involving flowers.
The two metal containers are for the Mother's Day plants Rachel is making to sell. The turquoise Tupperware sugar container was 25 cents, and it's staying with me. The old books are for Bekah, who loves readers from the 1940's and 50's. In the back left is this.
It's an odd little purse that I found at a garage sale that had no other odd items. I don't think it's old, but it has a retro feel. Rachel loves it.
Next are some ET glasses and a book about playing games on your Little Professor toy and another about science experiments. The science book we'll keep, and the other items will go in my Etsy store.
I got these two items at the same sale. They were mixed in with some typical yard sale clothes, shoes, and stuffed animals.
We have several of the vintage Betty Crocker kids' cookbooks. They are cute and have great illustrations. Here is a close up of the tiny can of dental paste.
I haven't decided if I'm keeping it or listing it on Etsy.
Well, that's enough for now. I will be at a shooting competition with the kids on the prime yard sale days next week, so I'll save the rest of this week's haul for next Monday. I'm linking up with Me and My Shadow for Magpie Monday, Her Library Adventures for Flea Market Finds, and Apron Thrift Girl (if she returns) for Thrift Share Monday. Go see what everyone else found.

Thrifty Finds
Are you ready for this post? I don't know if you are. It has been a FULL week on the thrifting front. It started Tuesday, while my older kids were in their two hour chemistry class. I went to one of my favorite thrift stores in northwest Arkansas, Potters House (Romans 9:21). The really great thing about PH is their pricing system. They have five different colored price stickers, and everything that gets priced in a given week has the same color sticker. As things have been in the store for some time, the prices go down. A chart on the wall tells you what colors are on sale that week. It works like this: an item is full price for the first two weeks on the floor, 25% off during the third week, 50% (sometimes 75%!!) off during the fourth week, and 50 CENTS (sometimes 25 cents!!!) during the fifth week. That's right, any item that is entering its 5th week on the floor is 50 or 25 cents. That really helps them keep their merchandise moving, and prevents seeing the same things at inflated prices on every visit. I try to visit at least once a week, and on Tuesday I got this gem.
(the desk, not the girl) I had noticed it a few weeks earlier, but at $25 it was a bit more than I would pay. I'm a cheapskate? Maybe, but I'm also a frequent thrifter, and I really try to keep my actual expenditure low for each week. Anyway, this little 50+ year old beauty was in very nice condition, and I was a bit surprised it made it into the third week (25% off) on the floor. I was even more surprised to walk in on Tuesday and find it 75% off! Yes, folks, a hair over $6 for this lovely. And as you can see, it is the perfect size for Bekah (the height of both chair and desk is adjustable). She is the only one of my kids who still does most of her homeschooling in the actual schoolroom, so this little desk is prompting me to rethink our school room. Since the other two kids do most of their work in their rooms, I think our little 3 desk, 2 computer L-shaped set up might transform into a bunch of bookcases, some computer nooks, and this little cutie. She'll get some cleaning, sanding, and painting, and be quite a jewel.
And speaking of bookcases, there is a reason that I am contemplating adding to the 10 that we already have in our home. We are book fanatics. I'll do a post some day on just our bookshelves. Most are filled with like groupings of books, such as theology, classics, textbooks, vintage kids books, etc. I add to our book stash almost every week. This week was no exception, as you'll see.
So I said it was a full week, what did I find? Well, let's start with fabric! I have a fabric addiction, and this week I indulged it.
The three pieces across the top are all still available at Hobby Lobby for around $6 per yard. I have about 4 yards of the polka dot, and about 2-3 yards of each of the other two. In the middle are two pieces I got from Potters House, and the bottom two are darling vintage fabrics from an estate sale. The one on the right is so vibrant. The total cost for all was under $5.
Next is a random collection of awesomeness.
The shirt is for me, and that is embroidery on the front and at the neckline of the back. I walked into a small charity thrift in a neighboring town, and this was on the mannequin by the door. I loved it and hoped it would fit me or Rachel. It was my size, and when I paid for it the nice lady pointed out that since the date on the tag indicated that it had been in the store for one month the following day, she was giving it to me at the 1/2 price that any item that's over a month old gets. Nice. The Seal A Meal was from the same store, and is for Husband. He likes to dehydrate fruits and veggies to use on camping and backpacking trips, and he has expressed a desire to try the vacuum sealing as well, This came with a variety of bags, so he should be able to get a good feel for it. The hat is for me. It was 97 cents at Potters House (i know!!). I will get a lot of use out of it during outdoor shooting competitions and Boy Scout events this summer. In the center is a darling little brass set for the girls' dollhouses. At $4 it was actually one of the most expensive things I bought this week. Last is that cute set of (retro?) measuring spoons from a yard sale.
Are you bored yet? I hope not, because I'm not finished.
Along the top are three sets of new twin size sheets for the kids' beds. I had not even thought about new sheets, but when I saw these still in the packages, for $2 per set, it made me realize that most of their sheets are fairly old and pilled, so why not? Under the sheets is a huge enamel baking pan that I got at a yard sale for 50 cents. On the left is a complete set of books about American history (our family's favorite subject). I got them for 50 cents for the whole set. That's the Potters House magic again. The set was priced at $19.99 when it went on the floor, but because it was in its 5th week, it was 50 cents.
In the center is a milk glass Holly Hobbie mug. It's very cute, and will be in my Etsy shop soon. On the right are some canning jars. I got about twice that many from two different sales. We are being overrun with strawberries right now, so we will be making jam soon.
Next are some planters and pots that mom and I picked up for Rachel. She is planning to make some mixed arrangements to sell at our little farmer's market for Mothers Day. We'll probably put them on Facebook, too, so if any of our local friends are interested, let her know.
Joshua told me he wanted some black and white Converse All Star type shoes, so I told him I'd keep my eyes peeled. While at Potters House (see what i mean?) about three day later, he found a pair that were his size and 25% off, so they were around $1. He also found a pair of the real deal for Rachel. Later in the week she found the pink pair for $2 at a yard sale.
We are almost at the end of this post. Are you still with me?
I found these goodies at various yard sales.
The four books along the back will probably end up in my Etsy shop, but we are enjoying them for now. They are all from the mid 1960's through early 1970's. The book Twenty and Ten is for Bekah to read, and the crayons are for ME. Yes, me. The colors are all unusual, and the tips are sharp. Don't judge me. The little dress is very cute, but after I got it home I found two holes. Oh well, it was only 25 cents, and can either be creatively patched or cut up and used as fabric. Last is the old book. It's an interesting story (i think). Rachel and Bekah and I stopped at a yard sale in a neighboring town. It was pretty, umm, how should I put it... junky. Most of the stuff looked like it had been in boxes or at the bottom of a toy box for a long time. The odd thing was the books. They were really, really good books. As in, the content was interesting and cerebral. Much more so than I would have expected from the other items for sale. But they were all in terrible shape. I think they had been stored in cardboard boxes in a damp place like a garage. I love old books, and will overlook some damage, but these were too far gone. I chose this one because the illustrations were amazing!

Don't those just suck you in? I don't know what I'll do with them, but they were too enchanting to leave behind. Do you have some display or craft ideas for book illustrations?
So that is my haul for this week. I actually found a few more items, but I had either already put them away, or I forgot about them until after the pictures were taken. This is a really good example of how great the thrifting is in my area. All of the things in this post, the shoes, books, hat, dishes, fabric, sheets, planters, desk, and everything else, cost less than $35 total. Seriously.
